The trees are standing
in the last light of dusk
tall and sentry ushers
of night and cool and
proud of their height
unique and singular view
realized after centuries
of patience and contentment
making friends with owls
and worms alike among
the rhizomes and rocks
that live in darkness
reminding the tree
in darkness also is life
